PAVEMENT DESIGN ASSIGNMENT (LAST DATE FOR SUBMISSION - 23/08/2013)


1)      a)explain the concept of ESWL by equal stress concept by boyd and foster,with the help of a neat sketch
b)determine the ESWL of a dual wheel assembly carrying 3450 kg each for pavement thickness 16,18,20 cms.the cente to centre tyre spacing is 28cms and distance between the wall of the tyres is 11cms.
c)brief on the variables considered in the design of pavements
     2)       a)explain VPI components in detail.
                b)discuss the stress influencing factors in flexible and rigid pavements?

3)      a)explain burmeters methods of analyzing  two-layered systems with the assumptions proposed?how to calculate vertical stress coefficient and displacement factor as per two layered theory.
            b)a total load of 89KN was applied on the surface of a two-layer system through a rigid pavement 305mm in diameter. Thickness of the first layer is 203mm and elastic modulus of subgrade is 44.2MPa.both layers are incompressible with a poisson ratio of 0.50.if the deflection of the plate is 2.54mm,determine the elastic modulus of the layer 1.

4)      a)determine I)deflection of the dowel at the face of the joint
II)bearing stress imposed on the concrete at the face of joint
III)distance from the face of the joint to the point where maximum movement occur and
IV)maximum value of bending movement on the dowel at the face of concrete when,diameter of dowel bar is 2.0cms, load -1250kgs, width of joint =1.5cms,elastic modulus of dowel bar is 21.2x105 kg/cm2 and the modulus of dowel bar=42.1 kg/cm2 /cm.
b)explain the calculation of stress at critical load position on a rigid pavement analysis?also discuss the concept of radius of relative stiffness of slab to subgrade
