Answer any Five Questions with 5,6 & 7 as compulsory

1.
Derive the following relations from fundamentals.
(a) e in terms of w,G & S
(b) Expression for bulk unit weight
(c) e in terms of n    
2. 
Describe the Pycnometer method of determination of water content and for what type of soils you recommend this method.
3.
Write a brief note the following clay minerals.
(a)  Montmorillite (b) Illite (c) Kaolinite
4.
(a)  Why do the clay particles possess a charge on them?
(b)  Write a brief note on Electric Double layer.
5.
A partially saturated soil sample has a natural moisture content of 15% and bulk unit weight of 1.9gm/cc. The specific gravity of soil solids is 2.7. Determine the degree of saturation, and void ratio. What will be unit weight of soil sample on saturation.  
6.
Determine the unit weights of soil in the loosest and densest states of 2mm dia sphere which have a specific gravity of 2.7.
7.
A soil has a bulk unit weight of 18kN/m3 and a water content of 5%. Calculate the amount of water in litres required to be added to 1m3 of soil to raise the water content to 15%. Assume the void ratio to be same. Take Gs = 2.6  
8.
     Explain the method of finding the coefficient of permeability by constant head permeability test. Discuss the factors influencing the Permeability of soils.
9.
Explain the procedure involved in classification of soil as per Indian Soil Classification system.
10.
Write a note on
(a)     Terzaghi’s Effective Stress Principle.
(b)     Quick Sand
(c)     Downward Seepage and Hydrostatic Condition in soils.
