 1.        Derive the following relations from fundamentals.
            (a) e in terms of w,G & S
(b) Expression for bulk unit weight

2.         (a)    Why do the clay particles possess a charge on them?
(b)    Write a brief note on Electric Double layer.
3.         A partially saturated soil sample has a natural moisture content of 16% and bulk unit weight of 1.7gm/cc. The specific gravity of soil solids is 2.65. Determine the degree of saturation, and void ratio. What will be unit weight of soil sample on saturation. Draw the phase diagram.     
4.         A soil has a bulk unit weight of 18kN/m3 and a water content of 5%. Calculate the amount of water in litres required to be added to 1m3 of soil to raise the water content to 15%. Assume the void ratio to be same. Take Gs = 2.6  
5.         (a)   Explain the method of finding the coefficient of permeability by constant
head permeability test.
(b)   Discuss the factors influencing the Permeability of soils.
6.         Explain the procedure involved in classification of soil as per Indian Soil Classification system.
7.         Write a note on Terzhaghi’s Effective Stress Principle.

1.     Distinguish between the Empirical & Mechanistic Empirical methods of Pavement Design.
2.     A set of dual wheels each carrying 25kN with a contact radius of 15cm and centre to centre spacing of wheels is 350mm. Determine the Equivalent Single wheel load by Boyd & Foster Method (Equal vertical stress criterion). The pavement has a thickness of 300mm.          
3.     Explain the method of conducting Axle load surveys. What are the uses of this data?
4.     Explain the method of conducting Non-Destructive Testing of flexible pavements in the Transient loading pattern.
5.     Explain the method of estimating stresses and strains at the each interface of a three-layer system using Jones’s Tables.
6.     Define the terms Complex Modulus and Phase angle as per Visco-elastic theory. Explain the constitutive equation for stress-strain for Maxwell Model and Kelvin Model
7.     Explain the design procedure of a dowel bar system.
