Design of Steel Structures
Assignment II

  Note: Attempt all the questions.
Last date for submission is 12-04-2013

1. A steel floor beam in a building has a span of 5.1m . It is simply supported over supports and carries a udl of 25kN/m (inclusive of self weight) and two point loads of 15kN each are acting at 1/3rd points. Design the beam (Fe 410 steel) if,
                a. The compression flange is restrained throughout the span against lateral bending
                b. The lateral supports for the compression flange are provided only at the ends
2. Design a beam of span 6.5 m to carry a udl of 20kN/m and two concentrated factored loads of 100kN each at 2 m , from either ends of the beam. the only rolled steel I section available is ISMB 350 @ 514 N/m (Fe 410 grade steel). Design the beam section if the compression flange is supported laterally.
3. Design the section steel column and suitable base for an axial compressive factored force of 2000kN. the effective length of the column is 4.2 m. the concrete used for making the pedestal is of M 30 grade.
4. A welded plate girder of span 18 m has following elements. Flange plates 400 X 16 mm one plate for each flange; web 2000 X 10 mm. Compute the sectional properties and moment of resistance of the plate girder. Design also the load carrying and end bearing stiffeners, if the plate girder is to carry udl of 120 kN/m.
5. Design the intermediate transverse stiffeners for the data given in above problem.
6. A bracket plate is shop welded to the flange of a column as shown in fig. Design the connection.
