GTE - II Assignment No. 2

MAHATMA GANDHI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING – II

Assignment – 2

Date of Issue: 8th April, 2013
Last Date of Submission: 15th April, 2013

Roll No’s: 10261A0102-136

1.    Explain Terzhaghi’s Bearing Capacity Analysis to compute Ultimate Bearing Capacity for General Shear Failure Conditions.
2.    Determine the safe bearing capacity of rectangular footing 1mX2m founded at a depth of saturated clay having a unit weight of 20kN/m3. The unconfined compressive strength of the soil is 100kN/ m2. Use Skempton’s Equation. Use a factor of safety as 2.5
3.    Describe the forces acting on a well foundations.
4.    Explain the following terms
(a)   Ultimate bearing Capacity
(b)   Net Ultimate bearing capacity
(c)   Gross safe bearing capacity
5.    A continuous footing of width 2m is to be placed at a depth of 1.5m below the ground surface on a sandy clay soil. The properties of the soil are: c=20kN/m2, ɸ=300 and γ=18kN/ m3. Calculate the ultimate bearing capacity for the following cases.
i.                    No effect of water table.
ii.                  Water table at the base of the foundation.
iii.                Water table at the Ground surface.
 Take Nc =30, Nq =18 & Nγ=22

Roll No’s : 10261A0137-160 & 11265A0101-112

6.    Explain the IS Code Method of finding the bearing capacity of the strip footing for eccentrically loaded case.
7.    Explain situations where PILE foundations are preferred and enumerate on classification of PILE foundations.
8.    The following results were obtained from a Plate load test conducted on a Sandy Clay Stratum using a standard plate of 30cm square plate at  a depth of 1.5m below ground level. Determine the allowable load on a 1.8m square footing founded at same depth.

Pressure (kN/ m2) 25   50     100   200   300   400   500

Settlement (mm)   0.4  0.9    1.8    3.6    6.2    9.2    14.0
9.    Explain the following terms
(a)   Allowable bearing Pressure
(b)   Safe bearing Pressure
(c)   Net Safe bearing capacity
10. Explain the method of conducting PILE load tests to determine the allowable load on piles.
